Decision support systems for rolling stock planning

NS has a big planning department in which we try to use all our assets, such as rolling stock, in the best way possible to minimize cost and to maximize the happiness of our passengers. The amount of decisions is huge and therefore it is hard to weigh all our options and find the best one. This is where optimizers help us. We translate the logistic problems to a mathematical model such that we can find optimal solutions fast. It always remains a challenge to capture the business problems as good as possible, because reality has too many exceptions to take everything into account. But these systems can support our decision making, if we know how to use them wisely.
