3.  GSNS course February (information for 2021-2022)

Date and time:
Tuesday 8 February 2022, 15:30 - 17:00.
Exercises: vkuhlmann.com/latex
Slides: vkuhlmann.com/latex
Organization: This course is part of the workshops rounds organized by the Graduate School of Natural Sciences at Utrecht University, as part of the introduction time of their master students. Registration for the workshop, and decision on which location the workshop will be held is arranged by them.
Description:

LaTeX is a code language for typesetting documents, for example your thesis, scientific paper, or just hand-in. It produces professional looking documents and typesets mathematical expressions well, making it the standard for academic documents.

This workshop requires no prior knowledge of LaTeX and will help you through the rough start which new users of LaTeX experience. We show you how to correctly format text and how to include mathematical expressions.

You need to have installed the necessary applications before the workshop. Alternatively, you can create an account on the commercial website overleaf.com. All information around the workshop (including installation instructions), can be found on our website a-eskwadraat.nl/latex.

This workshop is organized by the TeXniCie committee of the study association A-Eskwadraat. We facilitate LaTeX use for exact science studies, mainly by organizing courses.

Language. The presentation will be in Dutch. If you can understand Dutch somewhat, you can come and ask your questions in English if that's more comfortable for you! And you can ask for clarification in English when you haven't understood something.

The language is Dutch because first-year bachelor students at A-Eskwadraat are the main audience, and all of these studies are partially in Dutch.

Description: Working in a group online is difficult if you use mathematical expressions. LaTeX is a program that allows you to make all the fancy math you want in a text and turn it into a pdf. In this workshop the TeXniCie will take you through the basics of LaTeX, you will learn how to make a document with text and mathematical expressions. You don't need any prior knowledge of LaTeX. Because of time limitations you will have to have the program already installed (see this website (a-es2.nl/latex)) and ready to use for the workshop. You could also use an online version (we recommend Overleaf) and have an account set up before the workshop. If you have any problems or questions you can reach us via 'hektex' + (at sign) + 'a-eskwadraat' + '.nl' (notation to avoid spambots picking up the address).

Question & Answer

Question: References don't appear in the bibliography. Biber shows this reference as (book, label). How do I fix it?
Answer: Set Biber as the default bibliography manager (see thesis manual). With some older LaTeX distributions Biber is missing. Biber is often installed in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64. Is it missing? Update MiKTeX, or, in the worst case, reinstall MiKTeX.
